Connecting x-axis makerslides

Hello!

I am new to cnc and am in the process of reading a lot on different forums before I buy a kit.

Since I intend to use a heavier spindle (around 2 kg) and a longer x-axis, I have been reading about connectign the x-axis makerslides to each other to obtain an x-axis that is more resistant to twisting. An example is described here: http://wiki.amberspyglass.co.uk/index.ph...ssembly:_X_rail

How would this work on your machine? As far as I can see you use fixed spacers (53 mm) between the plates of the carriage. However, if the makerslides are bolted together the original gap between them would be eliminated. How would you handle this on your machine?

Re: Connecting x-axis makerslides

Hello Werner,

that's right. Each structure of the gantry is fixed. No matter what length of the spacers. If that were not so, then the Garntry would be unstable.

If you want to screw the two profiles together, the stability increases only slightly. You have already both profiles available. Whether or not screwed together, the cross section does not change. But if you, for example, would add a T-beam of steel or aluminum between the MakerSlides and screw them together, then of course the stability changes much due to the additional component. This must be screwed together then to force the compound. I personally find here always gluing much better. This results in a force fit over a much larger area.

The distance for the gantry plates would then be constructed either with precision washers are added, or equal with matching spacers.

But for a 2kg milling motor nothing needs to be done in my point of view. Only if the X-axis should be larger than about 800 mm, along with the heavy milling machine, then a stabilization could be performed.

Please always remember, in Shapeoko plastic rollers are used. These have only a limited bearing capacity!

Hope this helps!

Kind reagrds

Ronald
