pre-purchase questions
Hello!
I am about to acquire a Shapeoko-X kit, but I have some doubts, most from looking people´s builds and finding the differences:
- The star-shaped centers in the profiles mean you do not need to tap the holes before assembly, but tap them with the bolt itself?
- I have seen some people bolt the two profiles in the X axis together but I cannot see that in the building manual. Should I do that? It must make it sturdier, right?
- Some kits include middle-span plates for long Y rails. Will I need those for my 150 cm Y rails? Won´t they bend in the middle without them?
- When you place the waste board over the side profiles, doesn´t it bend in the middle making the build bed irregular? Why not place it on the table between the profiles?
That are basically my doubts for now, I will probably hit some others when I start building...

Hello e2n,
I was hoping that someone else can answer you, who better can english. But I ll give it a try.
- Yes you can tap the holes with a bolt itselve, but you should make this before assembly. This ich much easier.
- Whether you screw the profiles together or not is your decision. I mostly say, first try it without this than if you think you need to bolt them together, you can do it afterwards.
- The same as above! Try it an if you decide that you need them, you can make it stronger with L-plates. Starting with dimesions above ~100x100cm you can consider yourself to use the larger profiles (MakerSlide-MAX)? They are 3times stronger!
- Normaly you use the wasteboard to fix the router to an angle. This will only work if you put the wasteboard between the profiles. But you can also put the router on top of a table! Of course you can place another board under the waste board so it will not sag.

I am already assembling the machine and found most answers myself:
- I tapped the holes before assembly and it was easy and clean.
- I assembled the gantry without fixing the profiles together, but they looked slightly misaligned so I screwed them together and it looks sturdier.
- I have not got to the plates and wasteboard issues yet, I will let you know what I do when I get to that part. I considered the Shapeoko MAX, but it was not available when I ordered so I sticked to the X...
